Dr. Hassan Mohy-ud-Din has been awarded the 2018 Faculty Initiative Fund for a project on Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Although cancer death rate has plummeted by 23% since 1991 [Siegel et al 2016], liver cancer death rates have increased by almost 3% per year since 2000 [American Cancer Society 2017]. Liver cancer is the 10th most common cancer in the world; 5th most common cause of cancer death among men and 8th most common cause of cancer death among women [American Cancer Society 2017]. At SKMCH&RC, liver cancer (including intrahepatic bile duct cancers) is the 6th most common cancer diagnosed in the previous 20-year period (Dec 1994 – Dec 2015) [Mahmood et al 2016]. The most common type of liver cancer is the Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). In US, three-fourths of the diagnosed cases of liver cancer in 2017 will be HCC whereas, at SKMCH&RC, HCC is the predominant liver cancer morphology from Jan 1996 to Dec 2016 (~ 92%).

This project will focus on robust volumetric quantification of hepatic lesions with contrast-enhanced CT imaging.
